Push-to-talk

Hold your hotkey to record; release to stop and transcribe. This is the default and suits short bursts. A press shorter than the minimum duration is discarded, so a stray brush against the key does not produce an empty transcription.

Toggle

Press once to start, press again to stop. Better for longer sessions where holding a key is uncomfortable.

Choosing a hotkey

Bare modifier keys work — Fn, Left or Right Option, Right Command — which conventional shortcut APIs cannot bind. Left and Right Option are distinguished properly, so you can bind Right Option and leave Left Option free for typing accented characters.
